Petronas scholarship interview

A few weeks ago, I was called to sit for the assessment on the Petronas Youngstars Day in which I applied for mechanical engineering to oversea as my first choice. I stated before that I wanted to do medicine but in this case, engineering is my second option and interview like this will give me more exposure besides getting to meet new friends. Ok so I'm dragging things right now haih

Last week, I received the result and I was offered the scholarship to do Ausmat at Taylors College and degree in New Zealand. So in this entry, I will share my experience during the interview.

I reached Kolej Damansara Utama, the place which the assessment will take place at 7.00 am. My parents were asked to go for a briefing about the scholarship while the candidates were told to wait in a hall. While waiting, I met my PKTR friends and chatted about everything so actually, I was less nervous at that time. Then, we registered at the counter by submitting our original and CTC documents.

For those with incomplete documents, they had to wait to settle something with the officers while the others including me went back to our seat for the briefing session. Basically, we are going through two kind of assessments which are online assessment that consist of TSA and personality test. The other one is the group assessment. I was expecting a briefing about the scholarship or the bondage contract but apparently, that kind of details were briefed to our parents.

Ok, so the online assessment.

We were brought to KDU computer lab and started the test. Personality test was to measure yourself whether you are able to work as a team and whether you are a suitable kind of person to work for petronas, so the questions are somehow like ' I am an ambitious person' so you just have to choose 'most likely' or 'less likely'. Very simple hahaha
The thinking skills are quite challenging because the questions are given to see how do you come up with a calculation or a method to find the accurate answer. They were not SPM-kind of questions and you can answer any way you know as long as the answer is right. I cant remember of one question to give as an example. Sorryy!!

But overall, they were easy although there were some questions that I was unable to contemplate. Khazanah questions were much much tougher.

At noon, we had lunch and after that, the shortlisted names from the online assessment were announced. I think most of the candidates on that day succeeded for the group assessment.

For the group assessment, we were sort to groups consisting of five people and we were given a study case. This time, the topic was initiatives we would propose to make more people come to petronas petrol station and the Mesra mart. We were given 15 minutes to brainstorm individually, 5 minutes to voice out our personal proposal to our group and the rest 30 minutes to discuss with our group on the final proposal because only one idea will be taken. We tried to take all of the members' ideas under one bigger scope of idea but toleration was the key as well so some of the ideas were not accepted.
Other than that, the revenue and the expenditure are discussed too besides the strategic place for the petrol station (maybe at cities or by the highway where there are many cars)
Then, one of us had to present it to the assessors followed by q&a  and finished with the assessment!

The assessment was quite simple compared to other interviews that I've been to. My mom told me that Petronas selection are based on academic result, coco achievements, TSA and personality test, group work performance and family background (income and social status).

I am very happy for the offer but I'm still in great dilemma whether to accept the offer or to pursue medicine. Nevertheless, I'm hoping for the best in which I can contribute back to my parents and nation.

    1. In the application, I only get to choose the course, and whether I want to do it locally or overseas. In my case, I chose mechanical engineering in overseas. The university where you can pursue your degree in depends on your performance during preparation year. For example, I have to get at least 80 for Ausmat and use it to apply for any top universities in New Zealand. I hope that answers ;)

  2. So the interview basically consists of assessments and a group case study and that is it?

    1. Getting yourself to the final assessment only means that you're one of the many people that have the high chances to get the scholarship but the assessors will still have to discuss among themselves whether you are who they're looking for while considering your family income and co-curriculum achievements.

    1. Hey! I didn't apply for UTP. In fact, I didnt have to get an admission form from any university. I would recommend you to call petronas sponsorship unit for inquiry :) they're most of the time available (office hour ofc)

    1. There's no one to one interview session prior to further changes in the flow. The night before interview, I legit tried so hard to remember all the things about Petronas but they were not asked during iv. However, I strongly suggests you to know a little bit of Petronas background and probably its mission for the nation.

    1. I'm pretty sure you can wear any of them. As long as you're comfortable and looking sharp, there'll be no problem. Refer this link for proper attire for female :) http://kerjagraduan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/contoh-etika-pakaian-perempuan-300x172.png

  7. If I did not state many of my coco achievements in the application form (because if im not mistaken, the space is limited) but i have a lot of certificates, can I just hand in them?

    1. From my experience, I'd have to provide a photostated compilation of my certificates with 'cop sekolah/penghulu kampung' in the CTC documents and hand them in during the day of interview.

    1. It really depends on your interviewers. My case study group preferred to speak in english and of course after we all agreed with it. However, good news for you, my friend was in different case study group and she told me that she presented in malay. The assessors had no problem with that ;)

  9. As Salam alaikum syahirah.. I want to ask about the group discussion.. are the interviewer observe for the applicants during the discussion or they just want to hear from our presentation?

    1. Waalaikumsalam. During my group discussion, there were 2 interviewers in the same room. They will observe, listen and assess you at the same time. That's why you'll have to speak clearly and fluently when voicing out your ideas and when presenting. Good luck A :)

    1. Alhamdulillah I passed the interview and the result was announced a few weeks prior to the interview day. You'll receive an sms to check your status on petronas portal website. I remembered getting told during the interview about the exact date for the result to come out. Fingers crossed, all the best!

  14. hi!!how much is the computer allowance ( the only thing i care about) haha and is the accomodation provided or they will just provide us with the allowance and we need to find a place to stay ourselves?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Around 3000-ish if I'm not mistaken and the accommodation will be provided. Don't worry, everything will be explained and they will ask you to download a file consisting of all you need to know about the contract, accommodation, allowance and academic requirements ;)

      Delete
    2. Thank you for replying haha i did download all the file but i couldnt find any of them containing the allowance detail

      Delete
    3. Ohhh then most probably the documents I was talking about will come out after the final date that petronas sets for everyone to whether accept or decline the offer. After that day only the documents will be released.

    4. Hi Syahirah, is it possible for you to share the doc containing detail of sponsorship amount? My son is in form 5 at mrsm tgb. Just for reference

      Delete
    5. Hi Mdm Risma, basically the total amount given for every scholar is around RM 500,000. The subdivisions are RM 7200/year(living allowance), RM800/year(book allowance), RM200/year(stationary) and
RM800(latihan amali if made compulsary but not valid if allowance is given by the company where the students work). The accommodation and school fee will be paid directly by Petronas.

I hope this helps a bit but just to clarify that the sponsorship amount stated is based on 2016 contract. It may have some changes over the years.

  15. Assalamualaikum kak syahirah. This is honestly a dumb question but eh I lost some of my certs but i have already written my achievements in the cv (national participation) would you advice me to remove them?

    ReplyDelete

    1. yesss me too i cant find one of my certificate and quite silly of me but how would that affect my application and what should i do kak? and the interview is near already arghhhh lololl. next question is what is that song haha

      Delete
    2. Waalaikumsalam and hi :) I can't recall much about the documents part but I remembered submitting among my highest achievements with its certified copy. It doesn't matter whether it goes together with what you wrote on the CV so I think it's okay to keep them on the CV. It's just that I'm not sure whether they'll be calculating marks from the CV or your certified copies. Hope this helps. Also, good luck for the interview !

      Delete
    3. Hi Luqman, your case is quite better because you only lose a certificate and (hopefully) it wouldn't affect much on your marks but like I suggested to HyperAzyy, I think it's okay to just keep it on your CV. However, please do take other people's opinion because I might be wrong but my suggestion is basically something that I would do.
Btw, the song was ' I built a friend ' by Alec Benjamin. :)) All the best for your interviews !
